align="justify">

The recent furor over the National Geographic Society's decision to use the fictitious term "Arabian Gulf" alongside the historically and legally correct term "Persian Gulf" has had a much greater political impact and corresponding media coverage that many had anticipated. After all, the name "Persian Gulf", although long recognized by the United Nations as the only historically and legally valid term for the waterway separating the Iranian plateaus from the Arabian Peninsula, is not universally respected. The British Broadcasting Corp (BBC) and much of the British press have been calling it "the Gulf" for more than three decades. Moreover, even some organizations and publications in North America have not been immune to the financial inducements of powerful institutions and individuals inhabiting the western shores of the Persian Gulf. The abuse of the name "Persian Gulf" has been ongoing for more than 30 years, but until now it has never caused much media curiosity, let alone a minor political crisis. But this time around things are very different. First and foremost, the Iranian government has entered the fray for the first time and banned the National Geographic Society (NGS) from Iran until it corrects its mistake. Moreover, Iranian communities worldwide have become involved in a campaign against NGS; an online petition has so far generated more than 70,000 signatures. Iranian bloggers have been at the forefront of the campaign, with the more creative among them even generating a "goggle" bomb whereby those searching for the politically constructed name "Arabian Gulf" are directed to a site where they are presented with historical facts about the body of water. Many intelligent and curious observers may be tempted to ask what the fuss is all about. To understand fully why this issue generates such powerful emotions in Iranians would be impossible without a brief exposition of the history of the "Persian" Gulf.Millennia of 'Persian Gulf'It was the ancient Greeks who originally named the body of water separating the Iranian plateaus from the Arabian Peninsula "Persious Sinus". This reflected both an appreciation of Persian civilization and a grudging respect for Persian naval prowess. Early Roman historians - in keeping with the traditions of the ancient Greeks - called the waterway "Aquarius Persico". Thus the ancient world universally recognized this strategic waterway as the Persian Sea, a recognition that has persisted throughout the ages.Even after the conquest of Iran by Muslim Arabs in the 7th century AD, there was no attempt to alter the name of the Persian Sea. The Muslim Arabs universally referred to the gulf as "Bahr al-Farsi" (Persian Sea) and duly respected the precedence established by the Greeks and the Romans. This precedence was in turn respected by the various Arab, Iranian and Turkish empires that held sway in the region for the next 1,200 years. At what particular point in history the Persian Sea became the Persian Gulf is not altogether clear. But what is important and acutely consequential is that the United Nations has on two occasions formally recognized "Persian Gulf" as the exclusive term for the strategic waterway separating Iran from its Arab neighbors. The first announcement was made pursuant to the document UNAD 311/Gen on March 5, 1971, and the second was pursuant to UNLA 45.8.2 (C) on August 10, 1984. On both occasions, all 22 Arab nations represented at the United Nations signed the documents. Some observers have traced the origins of the campaign to change the name of the Persian Gulf to the rise of Arab nationalism and in particular, Gamal Abdel Nasser. In fact, this campaign predates Nasser by several decades and, like many other noteworthy events in that region, inevitably involved the British. The first person to propose changing the name of the Persian Gulf to the "Arabian" Gulf was Sir Charles Belgrave, the British adviser to the rulers of Bahrain in the early 1930s. Belgrave made the proposal to his masters in London, but both the Colonial and Foreign offices rejected it outright. The next attempt was made by a more consequential individual. After the nationalization of the Iranian oil industry by the nationalist government of Dr Mohammed Mossadegh in 1951, the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co (AIOC) was desperate to sabotage Iranian interests in the region to avenge its losses. The task of reviving the "Arabian Gulf" project was entrusted to Roderick Owen, arguably one of greatest unsung heroes of the British secret state in the 20th century. Using the cover of a shadowy functionary of the AIOC, Owen was in fact a senior MI6 officer in the Middle East. The primary product of Owen's campaign was a book called The Golden Bubble of the Arabian Gulf. This book constituted the first literary work of any significance to popularize the term "Arabian Gulf". Thus the campaign to distort and eventually displace the historical term "Persian Gulf" originates in the retreat and defeat of British colonialism in the Middle East. There is no doubt, however, that Nasser was the man - and the militant Arab nationalism that he represented was the ideology - that popularized changing the name of the Persian Gulf to accommodate Arab chauvinism. Nasser was less interested in changing the name of international waterways than being seen to be confronting the Shah of Iran - who was almost universally disliked in the Arab world at that time. Nasser's Egyptian regime, using the financial resources of the small Arab sheikhdoms on the western shores of the Persian Gulf, started the global campaign to change the name of the Persian Gulf, in earnest. The leadership of this campaign was gradually appropriated by the new Ba'ath regime in Iraq. The post-1968 Iraqi Ba'athist regime struck a close alliance with the government of Abu Dhabi - the most influential constituent of the embryonic United Arab Emirates (UAE). This relationship proved decisive as the Arab-nationalist propaganda campaign of the Iraqi Ba'athists had recourse to the financial resources of the UAE. Interestingly, the government of Abu Dhabi retained its close alliance with the Ba'athist regime of Saddam Hussein right to the bitter end in April 2003.Several fake academic and research institutions were set up as fronts to propagate the politically motivated name "Arabian Gulf". These organizations established extensive links with universities, publishing houses and cartographic centers around the world to offer inducements to adopt the "new" name for the strategic waterway. In time many Western academics, politicians and journalists were persuaded - thanks to generous financial incentives - to adopt the new name. This campaign had such a marked impact that in the mid-1970s the BBC decided to adopt the neutral term "the Gulf" for the waterway. This unprecedented move constituted the Arab nationalists' greatest success, as the BBC had unrivaled power and influence at that time. Indeed, the ripple effect had immediate results insofar as much of the British press followed the BBC in adopting "the Gulf" as the primary point of reference. In due course some media on the European continent and a small minority of media and publications in North America adopted the BBC approach in stripping the Persian Gulf of its identity. Why 'Persian Gulf'Those who follow the BBC in calling for the institutionalization of the so-called neutral term "the Gulf" are missing several important points. First and foremost, the name "Persian Gulf" reflects millennia of history, and disrespecting this name inevitably diminishes the histories and civilizations that grew around this strategic waterway. Second, the name "Persian Gulf" has been legitimized by the highest international legal body, namely the United Nations. This legal premise is diminished at our peril; just imagine the crises that would erupt if nations took it upon themselves to rename the historical and legal names of seas and oceans. Imagine the Pakistanis calling the Indian Ocean the "Pakistani Ocean"; Texans renaming the Gulf of Mexico to reflect the identity of their own state; or the Iranians calling the Gulf of Oman the "Gulf of Iran". Clearly, renaming the historical identifications of places is no trivial matter and can have very adverse political consequences. Third, the campaign to change the name of the Persian Gulf, although rooted in the frustrations of a collapsing British Empire, has been driven by the politics of Arab nationalism. This nationalism is now almost universally condemned as a failure, and any lingering dreams of pan-Arabia dissipated with the fall of Baghdad and the ouster of Saddam Hussein on April 9, 2003.After the Iranian government took its unusually robust stance against NGS, the Arabic broadcasting network al-Jazeera put out a cartoon ridiculing the Iranian effort. The cartoon showed an Iranian mullah disregarding regional issues and "Muslim" unity (depicted in quintessentially distasteful and provocative al-Jazeera style by a US soldier carrying away a Muslim woman) and instead opting to punish NGS for its disrespect for the Persian Gulf. While this kind of crude, provocative, false and hypocritical politicization is typical of al-Jazeera and the Arab media generally, it is important to underline that this issue is not inherently political. It is about the history and heritage of a waterway that has had a Persian identity for millennia. In a statement on its website, the National Geographic Society said that while it considers "'Persian Gulf' to be the primary name, it has been the society's cartographic practice to display a secondary name in parentheses when the use of such a name has become commonly recognized".Mahan Abedin is the editor of Terrorism Monitor, which is published by the Jamestown Foundation, a non-profit organization specializing in research and analysis on conflict and instability in Eurasia. Iranian bloggers also launched a web action on the Google search engine. The words "Arabian Gulf" elicit a spoof message: "The Gulf you are looking for does not exist. Try Persian Gulf." The practice, known as "Google bombing", has been used in the past against George W Bush, who comes up nder "miserable failure". The message parodies the text which usually appears when a web page does not exist, and goes on to recommend that users should read "some history books".

It is the second time Iranian bloggers have united to make a political point. Earlier this year, they used their weblogs to direct users to pro-reformist websites and online newspapers that had been closed down by the Iranian authorities.

Al-Jazeera under fire
In Tehran, organisers of a photo festival told the AFP news agency they had invited National Geographic's picture editor, Susan Welchman, to join them on the jury for the exhibition's competition, but said she was now no longer welcome. Iranian officials objected to the fact that the latest issue of the magazine's atlas refers to the stretch of water as "The Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf)". National Geographic has already been banned from going on sale in Iran, pending a "correction" of the atlas. On Monday, Iran threatened the Arabic satellite TV al-Jazeera with action for an online animated cartoon published in the wake of the National Geographic ban. It shows an Iranian cleric ignoring regional problems in favour of taking action over what to call the Gulf.

legofish.com about Google Bomb

بالاخره خبر به وبسايت انگليسي بي بي سي هم رسيد. خيلي خفنه به نظر من. بهترين خبري بود که ميتونستم بشنوم. الان که دارم مينويسم اين رو صفحه ي اولش Arabs lost the war and they were about to question the incapable leader, Nasser; but he played a trick, and with a cunning maneuver, Nasser deflected the public opinion to another issue. He accused Iran of not helping him in his stupid war, and in retaliation he faked a name for the Persian Gulf. 50 years ago he arrogantly ignored 2500 years of history, and called Persian Gulf as arabian gulf. After Nasser, other arab tyrants, specially Saddam, followed this trend. And now what National Geographic Society suddenly has done in the 8th edition, is nothing but giving credit to those tyrants and ill-mentally fanatic people in the arab world; not to mention those who feel sympathy with terrorists.
However story of the middle east map does not end here. In the map it is mentioned that some islands in the Persian Gulf are occupied by Iran but claimed by the UAE. It is worth to mention that Iran has been controlling those islands before the establishment of a country named the UAE! It seems that the National Geographic Society gets its source of information from an oil-rich southern Persian Gulf sheik, because not only the disputed islands, but some other Iranian islands are labeled with arabic names. Believe me, if after referring to this map, you try to buy a ticket to the exotic island of Qeys, no travel agency can help you; because its name is Kish, not Qeys!
But now if you go a bit further, and get closer to the Mediterranean coast, you will find yourself in another highly disputed region, the Golan Heights. The Golan Heights is captured by Israel about 40 years ago. Most of Israeli maps refer to this area as a captured (occupied) area from Syria, but in this atlas, the Golan heights are a part of Israel with no sign that indicates the area has been highly claimed by Syria.

Overall, the maps are colorful and beautiful, but it is not only the National Geographic Atlas that presents these maps. If you want to buy a reliable map, it is better to look for other publishers. I recommend Oxford Atlas of the world, with more accurate maps, and a more reasonable price.

الخليج العربی Inaccurate

- National Geographic Society has destroyed their reputation by falsifying fake names such as the Arabian Gulf as a substitution for the Persian Gulf in their latest World Atlas. Consistent with the indisputable historical facts, this body of water between the south of Iran and Arabian Peninsula is referred to as "Persian Gulf" in all old languages. This historical name has been in constant use for thousands of years simply because the first major nation-state in the region was created by Iranians/Persians. Regrettably, this Atlas is full of errors which renders it of nominal value (pictures are good, but the substances are worthless). Many of these errors seem to be designed to give credibility to various political interests. Referring to the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf is not the only falsification. Sheb'aa lands are located in the south of Lebanon and Syrian and according to the international laws belong to the Syria and it is not a part of Israel but occupied by Israel. It is a common knowledge that the name of Arabian Gulf has no historical precedence beyond 1960s. In regard to the fact that "The Persian Gulf" is officially acknowledged in the United Nations as per the documents UNAD, 311/Qen on March 5, 1971, and UNLA 45.8.2 C on August 10, 1984, the question is what persuaded the National Geographic Organization to use unsubstantiated bogus terms like "the Arabian Gulf" coined by the raise of Arab-Nationalism just after 1960s. This body of water (Persia Gulf) used to have different names. The Latin Persicus term was influenced by the ancient Greeks, who embraced and perpetuated the label Persikos for Iran. But Iranians have always called their country Iran - which means "Land of the Aryans." In 1935, Iranian government officially requested the world start using Iran instead of Persia. Where did the Greeks pick up Persikos? According to the 2002 Encyclopedia Britannica, Parsa was the name of an Indo-European nomadic people who migrated into a region of southern Iran in about 1000 BC. The Greeks first encountered them about 500 years later, and during now-famous battles involving figures like Alexander the Great gradually extended the term to cover inhabitants of the entire Iranian Plateau. Ancient texts and maps clearly refer to Sinus Persicus - supporting the claim that the term Persian Gulf (Sea) has very old roots indeed. Many other languages, including French (Golfe Persique) and Spanish (Golfo Persico), eventually adopted their own version of "Persian Gulf." In 2001, Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, notes that in ancient times Erythraean Sea "applied to the Indian Ocean, later to the Persian Gulf, and finally to the Red Sea." Merriam-Webster's 1998 Geographical Dictionary, Third Edition, makes the same point. It's a little confusing, but the waters can be sailed without too much difficulty - at least until you reach the shores of Eritrea. Erythros, of course, is an old Greek word for red. The Erythraean Sea was also known as the Mare Rubrum - Latin for "Red Sea." But in ancient times the body of water known today as the Red Sea was called Sinus Arabicus, according to historians. In other words, today's Red Sea was once the "Arabian Gulf," and this is a separate body of water from the Persian Gulf. It is important for an academic and scientific society to be precise and without discrepancy. It is shame to see what once a respected publication to be converted to a useless political instrument. It is a total disrespect to the history of the world, as well as international laws and regulations if this publication is not corrected with an apology to all Iranians. It appears money and politics can even change the geography of the world! That is why "the Persian Gulf" has been changed to "the Arab Gulf" in one of the most highly regarded global geography resource. They are other errors regarding names of the cities throughout of this Atlas. Such lack of knowledge is unacceptable! DO NOT purchase this Atlas since it has modified the geographic names based on popularity, money given to the National Geographic Society and politics. They are reliable Atlases with accurate geographic details offered by other publishers and organizations.

The question raises whether the Sovereignty of states and their historical and cultural heritage is a matter to be decided over by any individual or organization arbitrarily??!! So what is international law for? What is the value of international custom and international treaty as the legitimate and recognized common language of international community? Is a scientific and cultural society competent to decide or compromise the sovereign rights of a nation?!

What does Mr. Allen Carol mean by De Facto Policy of National Geographic based on selection of the practically used names, irrespective of name or names used by certain individuals or groups. Arguably, War, genocide and territorial claims are also still practiced every now and then in parts of the world, but is the mere existence of any such practice in international community enough to justify its legitimacy and legality?! Nevertheless, Is the National Geographic acting as the world authority to judge and decide the right practice?

Does National Geographic Society consider International Custom as a certain individual or group?! Is the United Nations Organization a certain group or individual? Is the government of the United States and other states a certain group or individuals?! Then, who remains there to compose international community?

Mr. Allen Carol continues that the reason of using the fake name is that some countries of the Persian Gulf region have chosen and are using this fake name!

Is initiating and using any fake and illegal action a legitimate justification to change the reality and rights of others?! Moreover, is the National Geographic Society the competent international authority to judge and recognize the standard geographical names?! Does repeating robbery legitimize and establish it?!

In another strange argument, He opines that the other reason for using the fake name is to facilitate web search for internet users?! Is it really possible to ignore the rights of nations and justifying this transgression of rights with a simple explanation of facilitation of affairs?!

It was a totally unfair justification when he added that since National Geographic should satisfy all customers and interlocutors, there is no way but to balance the names!!! It is really regrettable that an institution violates the sovereign rights of a whole nation arbitrarily in order to satisfy his clients! National Geographic Society can satisfy his clients and customers on his own pocket, but not on others'. For sure it is a unique and unprecedented argument that is more like a humor!

Hereby, for the purpose of repetition of evident facts, we would like to have you review again some historical and legal evidences and let you know the weakness of National Geographic arguments, of course if explanations by Mr. Allen Carol represent the policies of national geographic society.

As is well-known, International custom and treaty regulate the relations among international actors as is recognized under the UN Charter. Here we just intend to remind you that with respect to the Persian Gulf, both international treaty and international custom recognize Persian Gulf strongly and clearly in a way that are not deniable at all.

With regard to treaty law, you can refer to all United Nations Documents and Treaties where you may not find a single case that Persian Gulf is named differently. Also, The United Nations with 22 Arab member States has on two occasions officially declared the unalterable name of the sea between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula as the Persian Gulf. The first announcement was made through the document UNAD, 311/Geneva on March 5, 1971 and the second was UNLA 45.8.2 (C) on August 10, 1984.

The Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (PCGN) has advised states to Use the correct term for the body of water between Iran and Saudi Arabia as the Persian Gulf.

In addition to the above mentioned, International custom clearly demonstrates that along the history, the waterway located between the southern Iranian shores and Saudi Arabian Peninsula, have been called Persian Gulf. All credible and international sources show this. You may refer to the following links just as a sample. Please let us know if you could find a single case that Persian Gulf has been called another way?

As just some examples of the international custom, you may have a look at all the following maps and find the name Persian Gulf.

Maps of the Arab World: 1998: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/middle_east98.jpg

Maps of the Arab World 1997:
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/mideast_pol97.pdf

Maps of the Arab World: North Africa & The purpose of the present addendum is to urge that care be taken to ensure the appropriate use of this term in documents, publications and statements prepared by the Secretariat. The full term 'Persian Gulf' should be used in every case instead of the shorter term 'Gulf', including in repetitions of the term after its initial use in a text." Or the May 14, 1999 { 99-14427 (E) 200599 UNST/CS/SER.A/29/Rev.1} , which is stipulating the follow: "1. The term 'Persian Gulf' is used in documents, publications and statements emanating from the Secretariat as the standard geographical designation for the sea area between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. The full term 'Persian Gulf' is always used to designate that sea area when it is first referred to in a text and is repeated thereafter whenever necessary for the sake of clarity. 2. The term 'Gulf' is used in documents, publications and statements emanating from the Secretariat to identify or refer to the general geographical area surrounding or adjacent to the sea area referred to in paragraph 1 above or to refer to the situation around that sea area. The terms 'Gulf area', 'Gulf region' and 'Gulf States' are examples of such usage. However, the saltwater body also touches the shores of eastern Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain. Many people in these other states refer to the waters as the "Arabian Gulf."
Iran's culture ministry said the atlas published by U.S.-based National Geographic labeled the waters as the "Persian Gulf," but also included the "Arabian Gulf" name in parentheses on the map.
"As a reaction, we are banning their journalists from entering Iran and the distribution of their publications until they correct this," the culture ministry's foreign media director Mohammad Hossein Khoshvaght told Reuters.
The ministry also said the atlas labels three islands in the Gulf claimed by the United Arab Emirates as "occupied by Iran." Iran insists Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunb are part of its sovereign territory.
"We consider this a clear violation of U.N. documents and antagonistic towards Iran's national interests," Khoshvaght said. "National Geographic should immediately correct this big mistake and this strange move."
The National Geographic's chief cartographer Allen Carroll defended the use of both names.
"We do, and will continue, to recognize 'Persian Gulf' as the primary name," he said on National Geographic's Web site.
"But we want people searching for "Arabian Gulf" to be able to find what they're looking for and not to confuse it with the nearby Arabian Sea," he added.
The culture ministry has previously also objected to the use of the compromise term "The Gulf" used by some foreign news agencies.
---------------------------------------------------------- See these links about National Geographic Society &
